Building a Brand is More Difficult than Selling Products (Photo: Zoyalink)
If I were asked what is the most difficult thing about running a business, my answer would not be finding a product or getting the first sale. In my opinion, the biggest challenge is actually building a brand that people trust. Selling a product may be done once, but making customers remember the name of our business is a much longer job.
I often see businesses whose products are almost the same as their competitors, and even the prices are not much different. But strangely, customers still choose one of them. After paying attention, the reason is not simply because the product is better, but because the brand is more trusted and known.
That trust doesn’t appear overnight. Consistency is needed in many things, starting from product quality, service, how to communicate with customers, to how the business responds when an error occurs. One bad experience may not necessarily make a customer leave, but if it continues repeatedly, the trust that has been built can be lost quickly.
In my opinion, many business people are too busy chasing daily sales that they forget to build their business identity. In fact, simple things such as a consistent logo, a way of replying to customer messages, neat packaging, or a pleasant shopping experience can make a business more memorable than just offering discounts all the time.
I also believe that a strong brand doesn’t mean it has to be owned by a big company. Home businesses, MSMEs, even businesses that have only been running for a few months can have a good image if they are able to maintain quality and provide a positive experience to every customer. From there, a reputation began to form little by little.
If I could give one message, don’t just ask how to sell more today. Also try to think about how six months or even five years from now people will still remember and trust the business you built. Sales do generate income, but customer trust is an asset of much greater value. When a brand is trusted, customers don’t just come to buy. They will also come back, recommend your business to others, and still choose you even though many competitors appear. That’s the reason why building a brand is always a long-term investment worth fighting for.
