After in the previous series we discussed Merauke Regency at the eastern tip of the Republic of Indonesia, this time we will jump to the westernmost tip of Indonesia, namely Weh Island in Aceh Province.
Weh Island is not as big as Bali or Lombok, but its charm can make many domestic and foreign tourists fall in love. This island, which is part of Sabang City, is famous for its clear sea, rich underwater biota, volcanic landscape and very interesting history. Weh Island is a volcanic island formed due to volcanic activity in the past. Geologists explain that most of the Weh Island area is composed of volcanic rocks in the form of lava, tuff, agglomerates, and andesite domes originating from volcanic activity during the Pleistocene era. Even today, geothermal manifestations such as hot springs and fumaroles are still found, which shows that the geothermal system under the island still exists.

Weh Island is the location of the 0 Kilometer Indonesia Monument, a point that symbolically marks the beginning of the Republic of Indonesia’s territory from the west. This monument is in the northwest part of Weh Island and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Aceh. Many tourists come not only to enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean, but also to immortalize the moment at the point which is a symbol of Indonesia’s territorial unity.
Geographically, its location is very strategic because it is near the international shipping route that connects the Indian Ocean with the Strait of Malacca. This location has long made the Sabang area important in world trade and shipping.
Standing at 0 km of the Republic of Indonesia provides a unique experience. In that place, we were reminded of the charm of Indonesia, that the Republic of Indonesia is a big country, starting from Sabang and stretching thousands of kilometers to Merauke.

Weh Island is often referred to as one of the best diving locations in Indonesia. The waters around Pulau Weh have coral reefs that are still relatively well preserved and are inhabited by hundreds of types of reef fish, mollusks, sea turtles, reef sharks, and the occasional manta ray.
