Prabowo’s Military Training Program Reaps Criticism

The semi-military training program required for around 35,000 prospective managers of the Red and White Village Cooperative came into the national spotlight after the government confirmed that five participants died during the first two weeks of training. Reported causes of death include heat stroke, heart attack and respiratory problems.
The program, which lasts for 45 days, is designed to form discipline, leadership and a spirit of nationalism through physical training, marching and basic military material. However, many parties question the relevance of military training for civilian positions such as managing village cooperatives.
Criticism came from various groups, including academics, human rights activists and a number of politicians. They assess that:
(a.)The training is too heavy and risky for civilian participants.
(b.) The government is considered to be increasingly expanding the role of the TNI in civil affairs.
(c.) This policy raises concerns about the return to the practice of military “dual function” as in the New Order era.
In response to public criticism and the death incident, the Indonesian government has reportedly reduced the intensity of the military training program for prospective village cooperative managers.
