2026 Indonesian Student Demo: Economic Crisis and Political Debate

1

In June 2026, thousands of students from various universities in Indonesia held demonstrations with the hashtag #TowardsIndonesiaBankrupt. This demonstration was triggered by increasing economic pressure, rising fuel (BBM) prices, the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate, and concerns about government spending policies.
Students assess that several government programs consume large amounts of the state budget, while society is still facing rising prices of basic necessities and limited job opportunities. They also criticized the military’s increasing involvement in civil affairs and asked the government to focus more on education, health and public welfare.
Main Demands of Students

1. Lower the price of fuel and basic necessities.
2. Reducing state expenditure which is considered inefficient.
3. Evaluate the free nutritious meal program.
4. Reduce military involvement in civil affairs.
5. Increasing government transparency and accountability.
More than 60 academics, professors and human rights activists expressed their support for students’ rights to express their opinions and rejected all forms of intimidation of the student movement.
