Welcome back to the Nusantara Series, a series that invites us to explore the various riches of Indonesia, from culture, culinary delights, tourist attractions, local wisdom, to natural wonders that are the nation’s pride. In the previous series we got to know Kerinci Seblat National Park, one of the largest conservation areas in Sumatra which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. This time, our journey continues to the western tip of Indonesia, specifically to a tropical rainforest area that is no less amazing, namely Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL).

The name Gunung Leuser may be familiar to nature lovers. However, this national park is not just a hiking location or a place to see wildlife. TNGL is one of the last remaining strongholds of Sumatra’s tropical rainforest. This area has an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, providing a source of water for millions of people, as well as being home to various rare species which are now threatened with extinction.

Gunung Leuser National Park is in the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra. Together with Kerinci Seblat National Park and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, this area forms Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatrawhich is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its extraordinary biodiversity.
