Sources also said that almost all of Tokopedia and TikTok Shop’s technological development is now managed by the ByteDance team in China. TikTok explained that this step is part of adjusting its R&D organization to support long-term business growth.
Since ByteDance acquired 75.01% of Tokopedia’s shares in early 2024, GoTo still holds 24.99% of the shares and continues to earn income from this e-commerce collaboration. However, based on the Momentum Works 2026 report, Tokopedia recorded a GMV of around US$9 billion, the lowest among Southeast Asia’s major e-commerce platforms.
In your opinion, will the move to centralize technology to China make Tokopedia more competitive, or will it actually reduce opportunities for Indonesian technology talent?
