Indonesia is considered to have a great opportunity to become a data center investment destination in Southeast Asia, especially because the need for AI infrastructure continues to increase.

However, the main challenge is not just electricity or land, but the lack of human resources with special skills to manage data centers.

Technology expert Onno W. Purbo assesses that Indonesia does not yet have a strong talent development chain, starting from campuses, polytechnics, industry, certification, to professional career paths.

The problem is, many engineering and informatics graduates are still strong in theory, programming or networking, but are not ready for the operational needs of mission critical data centers.

The skills required include electrical systems, cooling, cyber security, compliance, and 24-hour facility management.

The industry estimates that the need for data center workers could reach around 6,000 people per year, but the supply is not yet sufficient.

Because of this, there has been a proposal to establish a national data center and AI talent program, including a special curriculum, industrial internships, data center lab teaching, and professional certification.

In your opinion, is Indonesia ready to become the data center center for Southeast Asia?
Or could this huge investment be hampered by a lack of local talent?
