The paper money that people use every day goes through a long and very strict production process. In Indonesia, money printing is carried out by the Public Money Printing Company of the Republic of Indonesia or known as Peruri. This state-owned company is tasked with producing rupiah currency with high security standards so that it is not easily counterfeited.
So, what is the process of making new money at the Peruri factory? Following are the complete stages.
1. Money Design Design
The first stage in money creation is the design process. The design of the rupiah currency is determined by Bank Indonesia as the central bank which has the authority to regulate and circulate currency in Indonesia.
The design usually contains various important elements such as:
• Images of national heroes
• Indonesian cultural motifs
• Distinctive color of each money denomination
• National symbol of Garuda Pancasila
In addition, the design is also equipped with various security features to prevent counterfeiting.
2. Making special money paper
Unlike ordinary paper, paper money has a special material that is stronger and more durable. This material generally comes from cotton fiber so it is more resistant to folds and is not easily damaged.
At this stage several security features are also added such as:
• Watermark (watermark)
• Safety thread
• Colored fibers that are visible only under certain light
These features help people recognize the authenticity of money.
3. Money Printing Process
Once the paper is ready, the next process is printing. At this stage, the money design is printed using a special high-tech machine.
Money printing techniques usually involve several methods, including:
• Offset printing to print backgrounds
• Intaglio printing to produce embossed textures
• Letterpress printing for money serial numbers
The embossed texture on money helps people distinguish real money from fake ones.
4. Added Security Features
To prevent counterfeiting, Rupiah currency is equipped with various advanced security features. Some of these include:
• Hidden image (latent image)
• Ink changes color
• Microtext or very small writing
• Elements that are only visible with ultraviolet light
This feature makes money more difficult to imitate by irresponsible parties.
5. Quality Inspection Process
After printing, each banknote must go through a quality inspection stage. A special machine will check for print defects, mismatched colors, or problematic serial numbers.
Money that does not meet standards will be immediately destroyed so that it does not circulate in society.
6. Distribution to Bank Indonesia
After passing the quality inspection, the new money will be packaged and sent to Bank Indonesia. From there, the money is then distributed to various banks throughout Indonesia.
Usually, there will be a lot of new money in circulation ahead of certain moments such as Eid, when people need new denominations for various purposes.
