If asked who is the richest person in the world today, almost everyone will answer Elon Musk.
That answer is true… for now.
But if you change the question a little to:
“Who is the richest man in history?”
The answer is not as simple as opening the Forbes list.
I also initially thought that Elon Musk must be ranked first in history. However, after reading various references to economic history, I realized that comparing wealth between eras is almost impossible if you only look at nominal money.
For example, how do we compare a 21st century billionaire to a Roman emperor or African king who lived hundreds of years ago?
Does it use the dollar exchange rate?
Inflation?
Or compare how big a portion of their wealth was in the world economy at that time?
This is where names that are rarely discussed begin to emerge.
Like Mansa Musaruler of the Mali Empire who was said to have been so rich that his pilgrimage caused the price of gold to fall in several regions of the Middle East.
Or John D. Rockefellerwhich once controlled almost the entire American oil industry.
There are even historians who include it Augustus Caesarbecause of the amount of economic control the Roman Empire had.
So what is Elon Musk’s position?
Does a fortune of more than a trillion dollars automatically make him the richest man in history?
Or are there still figures from the past whose value, if calculated based on the economic strength of their time, far surpassed Musk’s?
I tried to summarize everything in an economic history documentary which I think is quite interesting to discuss, because it turns out to be a definition “the richest man in history” still being debated to this day.
According to you and Sista, is it fairer to measure wealth based on nominal money, percentage of world GDP, or the amount of economic power a person has?
