Not Just Healing: Spirituality Is Also Important for Mental Health

Mental health is one of the fundamental aspects of human life that influences the way each individual thinks, feels and acts in carrying out daily activities. An unstable mental condition can affect the way they think based only on ego or lust which directs people to do negative things in every activity and routine. In Islamic studies, lust does not always have a negative indication because there are 3 divisions of lust in the human body. The first is nafs lawwamah or the condition of the soul that reprimands and blames oneself when one makes a mistake. The mention of lust is found in QS Al-Qiyamah: 2.
Unhealthy mental conditions can also lead humans to a mental crisis characterized by depression, anxiety and loss of meaning in life which distances humans from aspects of spirituality. These conditions not only have an impact on individual productivity, but also erode social resilience and spirituality which have long been the foundation for the meaning of life. In Islamic terms, all the actions of a believer will become part of his worship of Allah if they are intended as an expression of gratitude and surrender to Him. Thus, the actions of a believer such as studying, selling in the market are not only understood as worship activities that have practical goals, namely to be clever or to gain economic benefits, but are part of the broader and deeper meaning and purpose of life, namely as part of worshiping Allah.
