President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the Malacca Strait must remain a free and open shipping lane for all parties.

This statement was made after Indonesia and Singapore discussed the importance of maintaining security, peace and smooth shipping in the Malacca Strait.

Prabowo said that Indonesia and Singapore both directly border the Malacca Strait, so they have a big interest in protecting this strategic route from pollution, accidents and piracy.

Prabowo will also coordinate with Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand to ensure transit passage rights continue to operate according to UNCLOS regulations.

Singapore PM Lawrence Wong also emphasized that the Malacca Strait and Singapore Strait must remain safe, open and accessible to all ships.

Previously, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore also agreed that they did not want the Strait of Malacca to become like the Strait of Hormuz which was once restricted by Iran.

In your opinion, the openness of the Malacca Strait is important for regional economic stability?
Or do we need stricter rules for the security of coastal countries?
