Wushu and Kickboxing Ready to Enter UniGames Campus League

Two martial arts sports, wushu and kickboxing, are one step closer to entering the UniGames Campus League ecosystem. This positive signal emerged in an online meeting between the Campus League and representatives of PB Wushu Indonesia (PBWI) on Thursday (2/7).

UniGames is planned to take place on 6–12 December 2026 as the conclusion of the Campus League Season 1 competition series. This multi-sport event specifically for student-athletes has so far confirmed at least six sports: jujitsu, taekwondo, shorinji kempo, billiards, 3×3 basketball and women’s football. Wushu and kickboxing could potentially add to that list.

Head of the PBWI Events Sub Division, Danny Koestijo, welcomed the presence of UniGames. “We will discuss this further in detail. In principle, we and Kickboxing are just welcome,” he said at the meeting.

Campus League CEO Ryan Gozali explained that the minimum requirement for a sport to compete at UniGames is that eight campuses register. In the cooperation scheme offered, the Campus League will cover the organizing costs, while PBWI handles the honorarium for match equipment along with accommodation and transportation.

“We will hand over all participant registration fees to PBWI. Apart from that, PBWI will also have the freedom to look for sponsors as long as there are no conflicts with the Campus League sponsors,” said Ryan.

Danny is optimistic that the requirements for eight campuses can be met. Reflecting on last year’s National Student Sports Week, wushu participants had exceeded that number. “We have actually done guerrilla outreach and socialization with the possibility of wushu at UniGames. So far the interest is quite large,” he said.

Regarding the format of the match, PBWI will still discuss the number of numbers that will be contested – both sanda and taolu – with the possibility that it will not exceed the number in the 2025 Martial Arts PON. For kickboxing, Danny said that the 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra PON will feature a total of 20 medals including the men’s and women’s categories.
